Acknowledgement

I acknowledge and fondly remember my grandfathers, Maurice and Archie, who provided me with the inspiration and foundation necessary to share their story. I would like to humbly express my appreciation to the men of the 558th AAA AW BN and U.S.S. Culebra Island ARG7 for telling their stories. I thank and stand in awe of the countless veterans I have met and interviewed over the years. Lastly, thank you to the millions of World War II veterans who served our country during 1939-1945. Our current freedom was paid for in blood – it is the responsibility of my generation and those that follow to never forget the high cost of freedom and to protect it at all costs.

"It should be your care, therefore, and mine, to elevate the minds of our children and exalt their courage; to accelerate and animate their industry and activity; to excite in them an habitual contempt of meanness, abhorrence of injustice and inhumanity, and an ambition to excel in every capacity, faculty, and virtue. If we suffer their minds to grovel and creep in infancy, they will grovel all their lives."

John Adams, Dissertation on the Canon and Feudal Law, 1756
